What is TLS (Transfer Layer Security)?

So, what is TLS (Transfer Layer Security)?  TLS is a security protocol that allows websites to communicate safely over the internet.  Previous versions 1.0 and 1.1 are outdated.  Version 1.2 is now the standard.
